Sanctuaries
A safe, well-run shelter can be the difference between an animal living in misery or getting a second chance.
That's why we're committed to creating and improving sanctuaries for vulnerable dogs and cats - places where animals can receive the care they need and begin their journey towards a loving home.
When a shelter in Borneo reached out to us, they were in crisis. Nearly 1,000 dogs and cats were living in overcrowded, unsafe conditions. Tiny puppies and kittens were being abandoned at the gates, and sick and injured animals were being brought in from the streets - regardless of how full it already was.
More animals were arriving than could be adopted. Many had known only neglect or cruelty, leaving them frightened and harder to rehome. Resources were stretched to breaking point, so the shelter was barely holding on.
We knew we had to step in.
We're now working through a three-phase plan to transform this shelter into a place where animals can truly thrive.
Turning things around in Borneo
Phase 1

We've cleaned up the site, cleared vegetation, and put long-term waste management and sanitation systems in place. Vital equipment has been purchased, dogs at the shelter have been neutered to prevent further overcrowding, and we have created new feeding protocols to improve hygiene and nutrition.
Phase 2

The office, reception, and quarantine areas at the shelter will be renovated, new staff housing will be built, and a brand new cattery constructed to dramatically improve the quality of life for the cats. We’ll also introduce new operating procedures that move staff toward welfare-focused management, supported by training and systems.
Phase 3
due 2027
New, high-quality dog enclosures will be built, and further staff training delivered to ensure the very best standard of care.
This project is designed not only to help the animals currently living at the shelter, but to build a brighter future for the generations of cats and dogs that will pass through its doors for years to come.
And this is just the beginning!
Once the animals at this shelter are happy, healthy, and set up for the future, we'll begin work on our brand new IAPWA Borneo Animal Welfare Centre - a purpose-built hub from which we'll run a comprehensive range of programmes to transform life for stray animals across the region.
