Who we are
We’re IAPWA, and we believe that every dog and cat deserves to live a life free from suffering.
We work alongside local communities and trusted partners to protect and improve the lives of vulnerable cats and dogs around the world. From providing urgent veterinary treatment and supporting overwhelmed shelters, to delivering humane population management programmes and helping animals find loving homes, we're committed to creating lasting change for the animals who need it most.
But we believe real impact goes beyond helping one animal at a time. We also work to tackle the root causes of suffering by building local capacity, sharing knowledge, and improving standards of care. We champion humane, evidence-based approaches that create a better future for animals and the people who care for them.
Our story
IAPWA (International Aid for the Protection and Welfare of Animals) was founded in 2009 with a simple mission: to protect and improve the welfare of animals in need.
Over the years our work has taken us to communities around the world, supporting animals through rescue, veterinary care, education, campaigning and long-term welfare programmes. We’ve always been dog and cat specialists, but our past partnerships have led us to support a range of different species including elephants, pangolins, sun bears, donkeys, and more.
In 2026 we returned to our roots, refocusing our specialism on improving the lives of dogs and cats. These companion animals so often live alongside people, but still remain among the most vulnerable in many parts of the world.
We’re so proud of the impact we’ve made for all animals. But by concentrating our expertise, resources and partnerships, we're able to create deeper, more sustainable impact for the cats and dogs who need us most.

From transforming shelters in Borneo and expanding humane population management programmes to developing our future Borneo Animal Welfare Centre, we're continually looking for new ways to improve the lives of cats and dogs around the world.
